  6. Tim, I hate to be a bounder, but it would be ‘an’ 18-24 year that cannot spell.

    Weren’t they Zeppelin lyrics?

  10. You know, we’re all going to get old someday–except for those who die young. Given those two alternatives, I’ll take old.

by MaryMc on Sep 17, 2010 at 9:22 pm

  11. Silly. Some of these are 40 years apart. How will YOU look 40 years from now? Any better?
At any rate the winners are:
    James Hetfield and Bruce Dickenson.
    Metal rules babies.

by Graycard on Sep 23, 2010 at 10:19 am

  16. Well, they’re all ok, really. My parents, who sleep well, don’t drink, don’t even think to try even the less dangerous drug and eat healthy changed a lot more more in 30-40 years than these guys.

The lesson is – don’t rely too much on living a balanced life. You can look ok when you’re 60 only if your life had some sort of meaning.

On the other hand, your may have had a great life and look like a grannie when you’re 60. Who cares, really? What’s important is the way you lived your life.

And of course you’ll have wrinkles at 60 if you love to laugh. Am I right or not?

A saying containing “glass houses” and “stones” springs to mind. You remembered the apostrophe in “it’s” but in your hurry to impress, omitted the one in “can’t”. Dunderhead!
(That’s English, by the way; and so am I.)

  18. James Hetfield looks better than anyone else on these photos. He now looks better than ever… There some trick for that, I can bet.

  20. Alice Cooper looks so good, in part, because he’s always been a parody of rock star excess, not a participant. He lives a pretty clean life and spends a lot of time golfing, which, at his age isn’t bad exercise.

by Dodongo on Oct 2, 2010 at 1:26 pm

  21. “LIFE’S JOURNEY is not to arrive at the grave safely, in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out, shouting “Holy shit, what a ride!””

that’s the way I intend to live my life…these rockers are doing that exact same thing…

by Richard on Oct 6, 2010 at 11:48 pm

  22. Why do they all have the same hair style that they had in their young pictures?

It just makes them look that much older…

by Ash on Oct 8, 2010 at 1:13 am

  23. You’re all mental. Springsteen is clearly the winner.

by Gav on Oct 9, 2010 at 6:21 pm

  24. Joan Jett is hot as Hell. Even hotter live than either of these pictures.

Also, I love Bono’s eyes in the young picture.

  25. What the fuck? Are you serious? Did you just use FOUR semicolons and not use a single one correctly? Are you a goddamned idiot? Have you taken an English class beyond a remedial ENG 099 at Greenville Community College? If you copy your paragraph into Microsoft Word, it looks like a typographical menstrual cycle. For future reference, a semicolon is used when there are TWO INDEPENDENT CLAUSES. Meaning A SUBJECT AND VERB IN AGREEMENT. I fucking hate you. Sincerely, a concerned reader.

  28. Grace Slick is the worst…I’m 60 now and still clean up pretty good despite having done a lot of dope back in the day. These are wealthy, public figures who can afford a little botox and plastic to mend the effects of the past…Grace really needs to go shopping.

  30. Oof, jagged time;
    what bitter pills
    you have sw/allowed,
    what subtle boons
    you’ve conceal’d
    beneath your

    Rock will never die

  32. Great idea, I have a suggestion: Would it kill you to, I dunno, label the damn pictures? By all accounts being a fan of the rock music I should know them by heart, but come on. You don’t even have to add silly quips about how haggard they all look, just a name.

  67. Some of these musicians have aged very well, some even look better than they used to. At the very least, many of them look about like what you would expect.

Grace Slick was the biggest surprise, but then you do the math and realize she was 30 when she performed as part of Jefferson Airplane at Woodstock.

How did the saying go back then? “Don’t trust anybody over 30, unless it happens to be Grace Slick.”

But hey, some grow old gracefully, some don’t..especially the ones who lived really hard lives.

Steve Perry…I still kick myself in the ass for turning down an invitation to a party when I was living in Virginia, and Steve Perry showed up. He said a few songs before signing some autographs and finally leaving…I even had tickets to his concert in Newport at the time. Damn.

  86. Give Grace Slick a break — she’s over 70 and hasn’t stooped to the plastic surgery that others have resorted to (ex. David Lee Roth – eww). The Stones are the worst-off, I think — who would have guessed that the oldest one (Charlie) would end up looking the “best?”

by Keb on Nov 22, 2010 at 7:43 am

  87. Is it wrong of me to say this about most of the ‘old-time’ rock goddesses (as they’re mainly old enough to be my mother), but they look so much hotter now than they did back then!?! it’s just that the clothes, the more flattering haircuts that emphasis their good bone structures and the lil’ cheeky twinkles in their eyes so rock me to my core!!!

the guys look slightly healthier too, but that might be that rehab and better healthcare from harley street docs have slimmed them down and got them looking less stringy and near-death from ‘herrion-chic’esque complexions!

but still them ‘old gals’ are so hotter than most modern women in the business!

  92. The complaints about Grace Slick show how celebrity-obsessed the culture is: she looks just fine for a 71-year-old woman. That’s what 70-year-olds actually look like. Good for her.

  93. Lilly Allen IS a young Linda Ronstadt

by Sisi on Dec 6, 2010 at 5:54 am

  94. Some of them actually look better today: the Boss looks great, Meatloaf looks way healthier, Bon jovi and Stevie Nicks look pretty good. Most of them, of course, look pretty…weathered, I guess I would say.

  95. No Michael Stipe?! Booo.

  99. Where’s Jimmy Page??? Whaaat? Putting John Paul Jones on there wouldn’t hurt, either ( he may have been overlooked in Zep but he’s still better than 90% of these people). Robert Plant did NOT age well and he was the youngest in the band! You should also add Roger Waters, Roger Daltrey, Ringo Starr, Peter Frampton and David Gilmour.

by Jen on Dec 26, 2010 at 2:03 am

  100. I used to work backstage security at 3 venues and I’ve met every one of these people over the years. I’ve seen the changes over the years.

  111. Love,Love,Love Billy Idol.

Billy’s picture selected for “then” was taken around 2004-2005. He has aged quite a bit in the last five years but I think he still looks really good.

  118. Steven Tyler does NOT look nasty!! I think he looks great, and always has :) Others who have aged well are Nikki & Tommy, Ozzy, James Hetfield, Joan Jett, Stevie Nicks & Cheri Curry!

IMO, the nastiest looking one is David Lee Roth!! YUCK! WTF happened to his nose?

by HarleyGurl on Apr 13, 2011 at 9:41 am

  119. awwhhh, they have all the Motley boys but Mick Mars. They have Tommy Lee, Vince Neil, and <3<3Nikki Sixx<3<3 but no Mick:'(

by Kaylee on Apr 13, 2011 at 9:43 am

  120. What the hell happened to Grace Slick? I don’t care how old she is. But a Rock Chick of her stature should take better care of herself. Linda Rondstat, too.

by Ken on Apr 13, 2011 at 10:02 am

  121. The David Lee Roth pic is a bit unfair. The young shot is a staged photo where he’s made up and possibly airbrushed and the “now” photo is an unflattering candid closeup, no makeup or nothing.

by Hugo on Apr 13, 2011 at 1:07 pm

  122. No matter what these exceptional people look like today there is one thing we can all say. They gave us songs that put us back in time to that exact spot that we first heard there songs and help us remember the good times and good freinds of that time. To that we all say thank you all!!!

    by gg5000 on Sep 1, 2011 at 1:29 am

  145. The Beatles and Paul McCartney are overrated. Rolling Stones is real music, Beatles was bubblegum music of the 60’s. Junk.

by andrew r on Sep 5, 2011 at 12:10 pm

  146. sex cigars booze… Maybe we should all learn something. All this proves is that we should all live the coke life. Most of the people I know that are 40-60 have aged a hell of a lot worse then them… Lets go back to the good ol’ days, more sex drugs and rock n’ roll!

by maybe? on Oct 18, 2011 at 8:30 pm

  148. Madonna’s biceps make my wanna puke!

    by A_Dude on Oct 27, 2011 at 11:04 am

  149. This reminds me of the scene in “The Devil Wears Prada” where Andy had to learn all the peoples names with their pictures. I would have never “gone for” Mr. Michaels early on because he was just not my type…but he sure is now.
Mr. Osbourne looks great then and now, however they could have had one of him smiling, at least. I like the idea of him as the Wizard on the “Talk”

by bretsangel on Nov 1, 2011 at 3:16 pm

by Kristine on Nov 25, 2011 at 2:47 pm

  155. Yes, why is no one mentioning how Madonna finally looks her age in the ‘now’ photo?

by Renton on Dec 3, 2011 at 11:26 am

  156. Pat Benatar still looks great.

by Jenni on Dec 8, 2011 at 3:16 pm

  157. Most look better now.

    by ukgal9 on Dec 9, 2011 at 10:13 pm

  158. Bono hasn’t aged all that well, but back in his day, damn. That old photo reminds me of my bedroom walls in the 80’s. He was so hot, even with the bad mullet hair.

by Laura on Dec 11, 2011 at 7:55 am

  159. Terrible picture of Slash. He looks better than that now (after a bit of a chubby moment a couple of years ago.) Bon Jovi, Cherie Currie, Joan Jett, Nikki Sixx, and The Boss still look great. As does Duff McKagan. (bassist of Guns N’ Roses. Not sure why he isn’t in here!) Hot hot hot.

by Alexa on Dec 11, 2011 at 4:54 pm

  160. how did Bon Jovi’s chest hair go from bark to almost blond? does he get that died also?

by forbiddeneyes on Dec 12, 2011 at 5:20 am

  162. It’s fairly obvious, from these pictures anyway, who had work done and who did not! That being said, over all, I feel the females fared much better than the males!

  163. what about Ritchie Blackmore?

by dasragon on Dec 14, 2011 at 5:03 am

  164. Pat benatar and Joan Jett still lookin’ fine but Madonna…YIKES!!! Its true the guys didn’t age gracefully probably cuz of the sex…drugs…and rockin’, roll. Now they be needin’ the big blue V pill for the sex part anyhow…is my guess.

by donald on Dec 23, 2011 at 10:38 pm

  172. Maybe there is a bit of photo bias, but it’s interesting to see which of them look happier now than in the past.
Also Joan Jett looks stunning for 50 plus and Cherie Currie looks way batter in the later photo.

by Mr P on Dec 18, 2012 at 12:19 pm

  173. David Coverdale still looks ok… So does Robert Plant… And some of the Motley Crue guys actually look better now than in the 80s – the make up they were wearing made them look too … feminine… Now at least they look like bad ass men.

by hekatespassage on Mar 2, 2013 at 6:24 am

  174. I think C.C. looks better now than he did then. Just sayin’.
